Davao is neither a modern city nor a bustling city. Surely less attractive than Paris or New York. However, this medium city is quite significant for civil society movement. Lots of NGO make it as a home. The city itself, stipulates many ordinances designated for its citizen development. No pornography, living in diversity, drug free city, anti smoking campaign, receipt issued obligation for vendors, preserving local cultures, gender equality, etc are among the campaigns and measures made by the city government.
The city has started to be a human rights city, amidst of continuing social unrest in Mindanao and its people poverty.
Two thumbs up for Davao City !
What are human rights cities anyway ?
Imagine living in a society where all citizens have made a pledge to build a community based on equality and nondiscrimination; --where all women and men are actively participating in the decisions that affect their daily lives guided by the human rights framework; where people have consciously internalized the holistic vision of human rights to overcome fear and impoverishment, a society that provides human security, access to food, clean water, housing, education, healthcare and work at livable wages, sharing these resources with all citizens-- not as a gift, but as a realization of human rights. A Human Rights city is a practical viable model that demonstrates that living in such a society is possible!
